AI-driven features are becoming increasingly popular in the smartphone market. Google led the way with its Pixel 8, and Samsung followed suit with the Galaxy S24. Now, OnePlus is embracing this trend by unveiling its initial AI functionality dubbed AI Eraser.
This tool mirrors the capabilities of Google’s Magic Eraser, utilizing AI to seamlessly eliminate undesired elements from photographs. OnePlus has demonstrated the prowess of AI Eraser with sample images, showcasing its ability to remove extraneous objects from photos, such as the example where it expunges uninvited hands from a wedding picture.
The AI Eraser feature is set to be available this month for the latest OnePlus models – OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R, and OnePlus Nord CE4. It will also be extended to older models, including the OnePlus Open, OnePlus 11, and others, across all markets where these devices are sold. Europe is an exception, with the feature expected to arrive in the second quarter of 2024, by the end of June.
Details on whether the AI Eraser will be integrated via a photo gallery update or through an update to the OxygenOS/ColorOS remain unspecified. It’s also not clear whether the AI processing will be conducted on the device or rely on cloud services.
OnePlus explains that the AI behind this feature is trained on a comprehensive dataset, enabling it to navigate complex scenes and replace unwanted items with contextually fitting elements. This enhances the visual quality of photos, offering users the flexibility to edit photos with precision anytime, anywhere.
With the introduction of AI Eraser, OnePlus is just scratching the surface of its ambition to harness AI in unleashing user creativity and transforming photo editing. The company is poised to roll out additional generative AI functionalities later this year, signaling a new era in photo enhancement technology.
