Google Maps Unveils Two Handy Features in Latest Update 2024
Google consistently updates Google Maps, and users have recently noticed two new features quietly integrated into the Android app, focusing on electric vehicle (EV) navigation and road identification.
Firstly, regarding EV navigation, users can now easily locate nearby charging stations by tapping on the relevant filter button beneath the main search bar at the top of the screen. To access this feature, users must have their vehicle set as electric in the Google Maps Settings under “Your vehicle.” By default, gas vehicles are selected, in which case, users will see a quick link to gas stations instead. This update mirrors a similar enhancement introduced to Android Auto last year, indicating Google’s commitment to facilitating EV charging accessibility.
Additionally, Google Maps now highlights the entire length of a road in blue when users search for it. Previously, only a pin marking the midpoint of the road was provided. This enhancement offers users a clearer understanding of the road’s trajectory, including its starting and ending points and its spatial representation on the map. Users retain the ability to navigate to specific points along the road as needed.
While these updates may seem minor, they contribute to the overall user experience by improving accessibility and convenience. It’s currently unclear whether iOS will receive similar updates, but given Google’s track record, it’s likely. With Google I/O 2024, the software developers’ event scheduled for Tuesday, May 14, users can anticipate further announcements regarding Google Maps updates. Live coverage of the event will be available for users to stay informed of any developments, regardless of their location.
